NHMRC Speaking of Science - New frontiers in the fight against brain cancer

Around 2000 Australians are diagnosed with brain cancer each year and in the past 30 years, brain cancer survival rates have increased by only 1%. There are currently over 100 different types of brain cancer, emphasising the need for more research to discover new treatments and improve survival rates.

Join us as we discuss new research frontiers in the fight against brain cancer on Tuesday 15 July 2025 from 1:00PM-2:15PM AEST.

We’ll be joined by Professor Misty Jenkins AO (WEHI and The Brain Cancer Centre) and Professor Matt Dun (University of Newcastle and the Mark Hughes Foundation) who are respectively leading research programs that are advancing breakthroughs for brain cancer in both adults and children. They will discuss the impact and outcomes of their research and how this is being translated into clinical application.

  • Professor Misty Jenkins AO: “Novel immunotherapy approaches to treating brain cancer.”
  • Professor Matt Dun: “Running Toward a Cure: Science, Loss, and the Fight Against DIPG.”

As always, there will be a Q&A discussion at the end, so come prepared with your questions.

Register to attend.

Please note that this webinar will be recorded and published to NHMRC’s ‘Speaking of Science’ webpage.

If you have any questions for the event organisers, you can reach us at media@nhmrc.gov.au.

  • Updated evidence review requirements aligned with GRADE methodology
  • Expanded public consultation requirements
  • Support for living guidelines
  • Enhanced implementation planning for clinical practice.

Version 2.0 applies to all clinical practice guidelines registered for NHMRC approval on or after 1 July 2025. Guidelines registered prior to this date may continue to be assessed under version 1.2. A 12-month transition period is available for living guidelines already in development.
