The National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023) consists of a series of guidelines made in accordance with the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992.

Release of the 2023 National Statement
The National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2023 incorporates a revised Chapter 2.1 and Section 5 as well as some minor consequential changes (see below).
The 2023 National Statement is effective from 1 January 2024. From that date, the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2007 (updated 2018) will be revoked and researchers submitting human research proposals for ethics review, ethics review bodies and those involved in research governance will be expected to apply the guidance in the 2023 National Statement.

Minor administrative amendments to the 2023 National Statement
As part of the revisions of the 2023 National Statement, AHEC made some minor administrative changes to support the revisions to Chapter 2.1 and Section 5 of the National Statement. These changes include alignment of language with the revisions to Chapter 2.1 and Section 5, updated citations within the National Statement, reduction of the Glossary (now referred to as ‘Terms Used in This Document’) and the removal of the Index.
As the changes raise issues that are of minor significance only, there is no requirement for public consultation (National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992 sub section 14B(1)(b)).
