$35 million for 14 Centres of Research Excellence to address significant health concerns
On 26 September 2023 the Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention and Assistant Minister for Rural and Regional Health, the Hon. Emma McBride MP, announced the funding outcomes for the 2023 Centres of Research Excellence (CRE).
CREs bring together some of Australia’s best health and medical researchers in collaborations to explore and develop new solutions to significant health problems.
Professor Kim Felmingham from the University of Melbourne, and her collaborators, are among those funded. They will receive $2.5 million for research to enhance therapies for anxiety-related disorders.

TCR: Improving the Physical Health of People with a Mental Illness 2022 – outcomes announced
On 28 September 2023, the Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention and Assistant Minister for Rural and Regional Health, the Hon. Emma McBride MP, announced the funding outcomes for the Targeted Call for Research (TCR): Improving physical health of people with a mental illness 2022 grant opportunity.
Three research teams will share in almost $5.2 million in funding which aims to stimulate research that develops effective strategies and interventions that improve the physical health of people with a severe or persistent mental illness in an integrated manner.

Investigator Grants minimum data deadline approaching
Minimum data for all 2024 Investigator Grant applications must be entered into Sapphire by Wednesday 11 October 2023 17:00 AEDT.
Applications close on Wednesday 8 November 2023 17:00 AEDT.
Applicants must complete the required fields with correct information to be eligible for submission. More information is in the grant guidelines on GrantConnect.
Applicants who intend to submit applications should ensure that their Sapphire account is active or they request access to Sapphire no less than 72 hours prior to minimum data close.
Any requests submitted outside the recommended timeframes above may not be actioned.

TCR: Commercial determinants of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health 2023 - now open for applications
The Targeted Call for Research (TCR): Commercial determinants of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health 2023 is now open in Sapphire.
Key dates:
- Minimum data is due on Wednesday 15 October 2023 17:00 AEDT
- Applications close on Wednesday 29 November 2023 17:00 AEDT.

Centres of Research Excellence 2024 – applications opening soon
The Centres of Research Excellence 2024 grant opportunity will open for applications next week.
Key dates:
- Applications open on Wednesday 18 October 2023.
- Minimum data due on Wednesday 15 November 2023 17:00 AEDT.
- Applications close on Wednesday 29 November 2023 17:00 AEDT.
The 2024 grant opportunity will include four application streams:
- Basic Science Research
- Clinical Research
- Health Services Research
- Public Health Research
Priority area funding is available in the Basic Science Research stream for dementia-specific research applications with a basic science research focus.

Development Grants 2023 assessments finalised
Peer review assessments for the 2023 Development Grant scheme are now complete and preparation of funding recommendations is underway.
Thank you to the Development Grants peer review members for their time and commitment to the 2023 peer review process. NHMRC appreciates and values the contribution that peer reviewers make in upholding our principles of peer review.
The Development Grants team will be circulating a survey to capture peer reviewers’ feedback of the 2023 scheme. We appreciate participation in the survey as it helps us evaluate and consider improvements.

Applicants are reminded that only applicants who have completed minimum data by the due date can submit an application. It is also the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they meet all eligibility requirements, including limits on the number of times a person can be named as a Chief Investigator on applications submitted to a grant opportunity.
