Research Excellence: Microelectrode Recordings from the Vagus Nerve in Awake Humans
Professor Vaughan Macefield is the Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Neuroscience at Monash University. Professor Macefield specialises in recordings from single nerve fibres via microelectrodes inserted into the peripheral nerves of awake human participants. He is also best known for successfully performing the first ever microelectrode recordings from the human vagus nerve.
Professor Macefield was the dual recipient of two NHMRC Research Excellence Awards – the 2022 Marshall and Warren Ideas Grant Award and the Marshall and Warren Innovation Award in recognition of his research into understanding the operations of the parasympathetic nervous system and most notably, the human vagus nerve.

2024 Investigator Grant applications closing soon
Applications for the 2024 Investigator Grant scheme close on Wednesday 8 November 2023 17:00 AEDT.
Peer reviewers are needed for the 2024 Investigator Grant round.
- If you have received an invitation to peer review, please respond as soon as possible.
- Prospective peer reviewers will be contacted in mid-November to complete conflict of interest and suitability declarations.

Centres of Research Excellence 2024 – minimum data due soon
Minimum data for Centres of Research Excellence applications is due on Wednesday 15 November 2023 17:00 AEDT.
Applications close on Wednesday 29 November 2023 17:00 AEDT.
Applicants must complete the required fields with correct information. Use of placeholder text will not be accepted. More information is in the Grant Guidelines on GrantConnect.
Failure to meet the minimum data requirements by the deadline will result in the application not proceeding. New applications cannot be started after the minimum data deadline.

Invitation for Public Submissions: Australian Pregnancy and Postnatal Care guidelines
The Living Evidence for Australian Pregnancy and Postnatal Care (LEAPP) consortium is seeking NHMRC approval under section 14A of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992 for new Australian Pregnancy and Postnatal Care Guidelines.
Australian Pregnancy and Postnatal Care Guidelines update the existing guidelines and add new guidelines for postnatal care.
Consultation for the first guideline module is now open. View the module and make a submission online.

Consultation on draft National Digital Research Infrastructure Strategy
The Department of Education is coordinating the development of a strategy for Australia’s National Digital Research Infrastructure (NDRI) as part of the 2021 National Research Infrastructure Roadmap.

It is also the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they meet all eligibility requirements.

- their Sapphire account is active or access to Sapphire has been requested,
- their organisation is an approved MRFF Eligible Organisation before the close date, and
- any intended participating institutions are listed in Sapphire or request that a new participating institution be added by emailing help@nhmrc.gov.au, including the institution's website address (URL) and ABN (if applicable).

MRFF CEO Webinar – Thursday 23 November 2023
The Department of Health and Aged Care’s Health and Medical Research Office (HMRO) will host a webinar ‘From research plan to research proposal: Addressing MRFF priorities in grant applications’ on Thursday 23 November 2023 at 14:00 AEDT.
HMRO’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Masha Somi, will be joined by MRFF expert advisory panel members and grant recipients for a practical workshop about how to address research priorities in grant applications. An opportunity to ask questions will follow.
