Have your say on the draft Statement on Consumer and Community Involvement in Health and Medical Research

NHMRC and the Consumers Health Forum of Australia (CHF) are reviewing the 2016 Statement on Consumer and Community Involvement in Health and Medical Research (the Statement).

Thank you to all those who shared their feedback during the first consultation round by attending a workshop and/or by making a submission. NHMRC and CHF have incorporated these contributions into a draft Statement. To access the draft Statement, and further information on the review, please visit the Consultation activities webpage.

The Kids Research Institute Australia will be facilitating in person and online roundtables around Australia commencing in July 2025, where attendees will be invited to provide their feedback on the Statement in an open forum. All interested stakeholders are also encouraged to complete an online survey as well as, or instead of, attending a workshop. The opportunity to provide a submission via NHMRC’s consultation hub will be available soon.

NHMRC-Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD) 2024: Management of Multiple Long Term Conditions funding

On Thursday 19 June 2025, NHMRC announced the funding outcomes for the NHMRC-GACD 2024: Management of Multiple Long Term Conditions grant opportunity totalling $4.8 million.

This grant opportunity focuses on implementation research addressing the management of multiple long term conditions in the context of non communicable diseases. Find out more about the projects funded in NHMRC's media release

NHMRC ME/CFS committees' announcement

NHMRC is developing clinical practice guidelines for myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). They will be developed in consultation with patients, health professionals, and medical researchers. 

NHMRC has established 2 committees to advise on this work: 

  • a Steering Committee to advise on the initial set up of this project
  • a Guideline Development Committee to oversee the guideline development process and draft recommendations.

2024 Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) annual report form – now available

NHMRC registered HRECs and NHMRC certified institutions are required to submit annual reports about their activities in the preceding calendar year. The 2024 report form is now available and needs to be completed by Monday 11 August 2025 17:00 AEST.
Further details have been emailed to registered HRECs and certified institutions.

Invitation for public submissions: COVID-19 vaccine chapter of the Australian Immunisation Handbook

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) is seeking NHMRC approval under section 14A of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992 for its draft COVID-19 vaccine chapter of the Australian Immunisation Handbook.

ATAGI first published its COVID-19 vaccine recommendations in the Australian Immunisation Handbook in 2023. Public consultation on the current draft recommendations is open until Friday 11 July 2025 at 23:59PM AEST.

Publishing MREA final reports

NHMRC will be publishing selected fields from final reports for MREA grants on its website for final reports which have been RAO certified and submitted to NHMRC from Monday 30 June 2025 onwards

Fields to be published are grant ID, CIA name, Administering Institution, grant title, research summary, outcomes and impacts free text fields, and digital object identifiers for openly accessible research outputs. 

The text from these fields will be published exactly as submitted by the grantee, so it is crucial that CIAs and RAOs ensure no sensitive or confidential information is included in free text fields of the final report.

Forecast opportunity: 2025 NHMRC-Horizon Europe grant opportunity

The NHMRC-Horizon Europe scheme supports Australian participation in international collaborative research under Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding program for research and innovation. 

The 2025 Horizon Europe Call for Proposals opened on 22 May with applications due to the EU on 16 September 2025.

NHMRC will support Australia based researchers for select Horizon Europe topics and projects are chosen by the European Commission for funding in 2026 may be eligible for NHMRC support.  

NHMRC advises potential applicants that there are specific requirements for Australia based researchers and their NHMRC approved Administering Institutions to be listed in the EU application.

Details on how to apply for MRFF grant opportunities and all MRFF close dates are available on GrantConnect. Applicants are reminded that only applicants who completed minimum data by the due date can submit an application. It is also the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they meet all eligibility requirements, including limits on the number of times a person can be named as a Chief Investigator on applications submitted to a grant opportunity.
