Health and medical research funders highlight importance of sex, gender, variations of sex characteristics and sexual orientation in science

NHMRC and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing - responsible for the MRFF are working on implementing our joint Statement on Sex, Gender, Variations of Sex Characteristics and Sexual Orientation in Health and Medical Research (the Statement). The Statement reflects our commitment to health equity, acknowledging that every person in Australia has the right to be included in safe, high quality research that informs our health care.

Read our item on NHMRC’s news centre from NHMRC and MRFF leadership about the importance of sex, gender, variations of sex characteristics and sexual orientation in science and the ongoing work to implement the Statement across both the grant programs. Research teams and their organisations are encouraged to review the Statement and start improving consideration of sex, gender, variations of sex characteristics and sexual orientation in their research.

Speaking of Science - the Artificial Heart Frontiers Program: engineering the next generation of artificial hearts

30,000+ Australians are diagnosed with heart failure each year and yet, an estimated 144 heart donations are made annually.

But what if we could develop a durable artificial heart implant that could eventually negate the need for human heart donors entirely?

In celebration of National Science Week, join us as we host the innovative Co-Director of The Artificial Heart Frontiers Program, Professor Shaun Gregory on Tuesday 12 August 2025 from 10:00–11:00 AEST as part of our Speaking of Science series. Professor Gregory will discuss how the program is engineering the next generation of artificial hearts, with the end goal of saving countless lives now and in the future.

As always, there will be a Q&A discussion at the end, so come prepared with your questions.

Register to attend.

Please note that this webinar will be recorded and published to NHMRC’s website afterwards as part of our ‘Speaking of Science’ series.

If you have any questions for the event organisers you can reach us at media@nhmrc.gov.au.
