Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), also simply termed autism, is a persistent developmental disorder characterised by symptoms evident from early childhood. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and include difficulty in social interaction, restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour, and communication challenges.
Resilience to environmental change, emerging health threats and emergencies was one of NHMRC's strategic priorities for action in 2018–2021. NHMRC delivered on this priority by boosting research capacity and capability through a special initiative that would improve Australia’s preparedness and responsiveness to human health threats from changing environmental conditions and extreme weather events.NHMRC opened a Special initiative in Human Health and Environmental Change on 18 November 2020. Associate Professor Jason Armfield set out to explain the origins of dental fear and to understand why fear of the dentist is a serious psychological problem for many Australians. He developed a ‘dental anxiety scale’ that will help to identify and treat the condition across the world, leading to more people visiting the dentist and better population level oral health.
