MRFF – 2022 Indigenous Health Research (GO5832)

Stream 1 (Incubator)

Conduct small-scale developmental projects to establish feasible, evidence-based approaches that demonstrate:

• Topic A: local, regional or national collaboration to address key priorities as outlined in Priority Areas 1.1 and 1.2 of the Implementation Plan.
• Topic B: how to overcome barriers to effective maternal health and health care.

Intended outcome

Generating new approaches to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander pregnant mothers, their children during the first 2000 days of life, and enhance effective maternal health and health care.

Stream 2 (Incubator)

Conduct small-scale developmental projects to establish feasible, evidence-based approaches that demonstrate the nature and timing of interventions to positively alter the life trajectories of our young people, including reductions in disease across the life course.

Intended outcome

Generating new approaches to positively alter the health and life trajectories of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people.

Stream 3 (Incubator)

Conduct small-scale developmental projects to establish feasible, evidence-based approaches that demonstrate or identify:

• Topic A: interventions targeted toward the prevention of multimorbidity within Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.
• Topic B: interventions that are most effective in reducing the multiple risk factors within Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities that contribute to chronic disease.

Intended outcome

Generating new approaches to reduce the prevalence of multi-morbidity and reduce the risk-factors that contribute to chronic disease within Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.

Stream 4 (Targeted Call for Research)

Conduct targeted primary health care research that will focus on implementation trials to mobilise primary and mental health care research capabilities to:

• Topic A: improve primary and mental health care service delivery.
• Topic B: provide sustainable and culturally appropriate models of care, care coordination and operation management to meet community needs.

Innovation grants

Applications to Streams 4 and 5 may be considered for an innovation grant, if requested in your application (eligibility criteria apply). Innovation grants fund smaller scope research projects so grantees can build evidence of the feasibility of the proposed project so that it can be more competitive in future funding opportunities.

Intended outcome

Generating improved, sustainable and culturally appropriate approaches to primary care, mental health care, and other types of health care for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

Stream 5 (Targeted Call for Research)

Develop novel collaborative intervention research that connects early life preventable disease and the development of health equity across the life course of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

Priority will be given to interventions that will impact improvement in early life and wellbeing as well as adult health and healthy ageing.

Innovation grants

Applications to Streams 4 and 5 may be considered for an innovation grant, if requested in your application (eligibility criteria apply). Innovation grants fund smaller scope research projects so grantees can build evidence of the feasibility of the proposed project so that it can be more competitive in future funding opportunities.

Intended outcome

Generating new approaches to reduce early life preventable disease to improve the health life-course and healthy ageing of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

Stream 6 (Incubator)

Conduct small-scale developmental projects to establish feasible, evidence-based approaches for addressing racism in the health system at multiple levels.

Intended outcome

Generating new approaches that reduces racism in the health system to enable improved care for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

Maximum project periods

The maximum project period that can be applied for each stream is as follows:

• Stream 1 (Incubator): 2 years
• Stream 2 (Incubator): 2 years
• Stream 3 (Incubator): 2 years
• Stream 4* (Targeted Call for Research): 4 years
• Stream 5* (Targeted Call for Research): 4 years
• Stream 6 (Incubator): 2 years.

*The maximum grant period that can be applied for an Innovation grant in Streams 4 and 5 is one year.

Funding available

For this grant opportunity, the amounts available for a single grant in each stream are as follows:

• Stream 1 (Incubator): the minimum grant amount is $0.2 million, and the maximum amount available for a single grant is $1.0 million.
• Stream 2 (Incubator): the minimum grant amount is $0.2 million, and the maximum amount available for a single grant is $1.0 million.
• Stream 3 (Incubator): the minimum grant amount is $0.2 million, and the maximum amount available for a single grant is $1.0 million.
• Stream 4** (Targeted Call for Research): there is no minimum grant amount, and the maximum amount available for a single grant is $3.0 million.
• Stream 5** (Targeted Call for Research): there is no minimum grant amount, and the maximum amount available for a single grant is $3.0 million.
• Stream 6 (Incubator): the minimum grant amount is $0.2 million, and the maximum amount available for a single grant is $1.0 million.

**For Streams 4 and 5 the amount available for a single Innovation grant is fixed at $0.2 million.

Other requirements

Applications to this grant opportunity must propose research that addresses one of the 6 streams of research. An application may be submitted to one of the above 6 streams only. Applicants must specify the stream to which they are applying in their application.
