Speaking of Science - Cultural safety and fostering connections to social and emotional wellbeing

A time for growth, reflection and commitment to walking together to build a more united nation, this National Reconciliation Week we’re reflecting on the ongoing connection between past, present and future.

Join us as we host Kokatha/Wirangu woman from South Australia, Associate Professor Yvonne Clark, for Speaking of Science on Friday 30 May 2025 from 14:00–15:00 AEST.

With an extensive background in clinical psychology, Associate Professor Clark has dedicated her research career towards improving social and emotional wellbeing and providing support pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people during pregnancy, along with support to the fathers, parents and young people.

As always, there will be a Q&A discussion at the end, so come prepared with your questions for Associate Professor Clark.
Register to attend.

Please note that this webinar will be recorded and published to NHMRC’s website afterwards as part of our ‘Speaking of Science’ series.

If you have any questions for the event organisers, you can reach us at media@nhmrc.gov.au.

2025 NHMRC-Horizon Europe grant scheme

The NHMRC-Horizon Europe grant scheme supports Australian participation in international collaborative research under Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding program for research and innovation.

The 2025 Horizon Europe call for proposals is now open with applications due to the EU on 16 September 2025.

NHMRC is considering supporting a limited number of Horizon Europe topics to be advised in the coming weeks. Projects which involve Australia based researchers and are chosen by the European Commission for funding in 2026 may be eligible for NHMRC support.

NHMRC advises potential applicants that there will be specific requirements for Australia based researchers and their NHMRC-approved Administering Institutions to be named in the EU application.

More information is available on the Horizon Europe website (PDF).

Publication of MREA final report fields

NHMRC will be publishing selected fields from final reports for MREA grants on its website for final reports which have been RAO certified and submitted to NHMRC from Monday 30 June 2025 onwards

Fields to be published are grant ID, CIA name, Administering Institution, grant title, research summary, outcomes and impacts free text fields, and digital object identifiers for openly accessible research outputs.

The text from these fields will be published exactly as submitted by the grantee, so it is crucial that CIAs and RAOs ensure no sensitive or confidential information is included in free text fields of the final report.

For more information see the Progress, final and additional reporting webpage.

NHMRC approved third party guidelines

On 24 March 2025 the Chief Executive Officer of NHMRC, Professor Steve Wesselingh, approved the recommendations of the Australian Guidelines for Assessment and Diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) developed by the University of Queensland. The guidelines aim to support health professionals in undertaking assessment and diagnosis of FASD across the lifespan.

On 22 April 2025 the Chief Executive Officer of NHMRC, Professor Steve Wesselingh, approved the recommendations of version 11.2 of the Australian and New Zealand Living Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management developed by the Stroke Foundation. This version includes new and updated recommendations on intracerebral haemorrhage management – surgical interventions, cerebral venous thrombosis, sleep disorders and carer support.

2025 Postgraduate Scholarship scheme closing

The 2025 Postgraduate Scholarship scheme closes at 17:00 (AEST) Wednesday 4 June 2025

NHMRC recommends that applicants who have not already submitted their applications to their RAO do so as soon as possible.

Applicants and RAOs should also note that the application title should reflect the nature of the project and not the name of the applicant, or the name of the scheme (e.g. PhD application).

RAOs are required to certify applications for submission. Applications should only be certified once they are complete and ready for submission.

Further details are available in the Postgraduate Scholarships 2025 Guidelines, on GrantConnect (GO7640) and NHMRC’s website
