The new NHMRC National Institute for Dementia Research will provide the platform for expanding dementia research and translation in Australia by developing dementia research priorities and coordinating research within these priority areas. Consequently NHMRC, with the assistance of ThinkPlace, is undertaking a comprehensive consultation project with a diverse range of dementia stakeholders to identify Australian priorities for dementia research and translation.
The consultation project was guided by stakeholders with expertise in research, translation and consumer advocacy. It was a multistage process involving in-depth interviews, focus groups and a broad survey to engage dementia researchers, research organisations, clinicians, people with dementia, carers, health and aged care providers and policy makers.
