Modifiable lifestyle risk and protective factors for dementia offer very real opportunities for programs that seek to prevent or delay the onset of dementia and thereby decrease the incidence of dementia across generations. Even a modest reduction in incidence rates is projected to have significant impacts on society, healthcare and the economy1
1 National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling: Economic Cost of Dementia in Australia 2016-2056 (2017).
However, evidence for dementia risk reduction and prevention measures remains tentative, especially with regard to how modifiable risk factors contribute to the underlying pathology of dementia. There is also a need for reliable information to inform public health programs in relation to and/or if a specific quantity or dose of factors/interventions would be required for protection.
Priority Round 5 will address these challenges by supporting dementia risk reduction and prevention research that will deliver to the Australian community high quality, evidenced-based information on key risk factors of dementia for effective interventions that will decrease the prevalence or delay the onset of dementia. Knowledge translation is central to the initiative, as research translation remains one of the biggest challenges to dementia risk reduction and prevention efforts.
The specific objectives of the round are to:
- facilitate the implementation of evidence-based dementia risk reduction and prevention strategies by providing a knowledge translation pathway
- leverage risk reduction and prevention programs being undertaken in other chronic disease areas where there is sufficient evidence that these programs are also relevant for dementia risk reduction and prevention, and
- develop novel means to engage health system players in research.
Under PR5, funding will be provided up to 5 years in duration and up to $18 million in total/up to $2 million per grant.
