Australia's first Centre of Clinical Research Excellence dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, was announced today by the Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, Senator Kay Patterson.
The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia, in partnership with Flinders University, will receive more than $1.8 million over five years to establish the Centre.
Senator Patterson said the centre would help train future leaders in Aboriginal community-controlled health research and find solutions to the health disadvantage facing Indigenous Australians.
"The Centre will focus on issues that are of national relevance to Indigenous Australians and provide a range of research and other training opportunities to increase the capacity of Indigenous communities to direct and conduct their own health research independently," she said.
The National Health and Medical Research Council administers the Centres of Clinical Research Excellence Program. Last year, nine major health research institutions in Melbourne, Sydney, Queensland and Western Australia were established under this prestigious Commonwealth Program.
The Program encourages innovative clinical research, ensures effective translation of the outcomes of this research into clinical practice for the benefit of all Australians and provides excellent clinical research training opportunities for new researchers.
