My review of the successes in implementing the 2010-12 Strategic Plan was tabled in the House of Representatives on 21 August 2012 and is now available on the NHMRC website. This review, under section 17(2) of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992, outlines NHMRC’s achievements and activities against the objectives of the 2010-12 Strategic Plan.

The report showcases significant outcomes for NHMRC in the Triennium, which also saw NHMRC celebrate 75 years of contribution to the health of Australians.  NHMRC’s international symposium Research for a healthy future drew attendance from the Heads of International Research Organisations around the world, including the National Institutes of Health, the United Kingdom Medical Research Council, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Wellcome Trust and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.  This provided an opportunity for some of the upcoming researchers in Australia to hear directly from those leaders about the health challenges of the coming decades.

Over the past three years, NHMRC has continued to administer the Medical Research Endowment Account to ensure that the best research and the best researchers in Australia were funded.

NHMRC has entered into strong international collaborations to improve research funding policy and to meet global health challenges such as the International Cancer Genome Consortium and the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases. Our role in providing evidence based health advice and to ensure that health research and practice occurs in a strong ethical framework has continued.

None of the many achievements set out in the report would have been possible without the leadership and contribution of the Council of NHMRC, its Principal and Working Committees, staff of the NHMRC and the thousands of researchers who take part in peer review processes each year.
