$5.5 million in funding for research projects to address the impact of loneliness in chronic disease
On Thursday 13 July 2023, the Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention and Assistant Minister for Rural and Regional Health, the Hon Emma McBride MP, announced the funding outcomes for the Targeted Call for Research (TCR): Loneliness, social isolation and chronic disease management grant opportunity.
Through this TCR, four research teams will receive funding to investigate ways to identify and support people with chronic disease who are experiencing loneliness and social isolation.
Professor Catherine Mihalopoulos from Monash University, and her collaborators, are among those funded. They will work with a diverse team of consumer and community members to develop acceptable, targeted, equitable and cost-effective strategies for tackling loneliness and social isolation as part of a holistic approach to chronic disease management.

$3.5 million in targeted research funding to improve dementia care in culturally diverse communities
On Monday 10 July 2023, NHMRC announced the funding outcomes for the Targeted Call for Research (TCR): Cultural, ethnic and linguistic diversity in dementia research grant opportunity.
This TCR will fund three research teams to undertake research to improve clinical pathways for the diagnosis, early intervention, treatment and management of dementia for people from culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Release of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research
The National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, 2023 was issued on 29 June 2023.
The new National Statement includes a revised Chapter 2.1, a revised Section 5 and consequential changes to Sections 3 and 4, and the Glossary.
The 2023 National Statement is effective from 1 January 2024.

Review of the Indigenous Research Excellence Criteria
NHMRC, with advice from its Principal Committee Indigenous Caucus, is reviewing the Indigenous Research Excellence Criteria (IREC) and their use.
The IREC are required when submitting any NHMRC grant applications where 20 per cent or more of research effort and/or capacity building is related to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health.
A national consultation process will begin soon. It will include face-to-face workshops in key locations around Australia and an online public consultation.

NHMRC participation in Horizon Europe
The NHMRC-European Union Collaborative Research Grant Scheme supports Australian participation in international collaborative research under Horizon Europe.
Horizon Europe is the European Union’s key funding program for research and innovation.
Projects which involve Australian-based researchers and are chosen by the European Commission for funding in 2025 may be eligible for NHMRC support.
NHMRC will support Australian-based researchers for a limited number of Horizon Europe topics.

Targeted Call for Research: Ensuring the quality and safety of telehealth 2023 - now open for applications
The Targeted Call for Research (TCR): Ensuring the quality and safety of telehealth 2023 grant opportunity is now open for applications in Sapphire.
The objectives of this TCR are to identify and understand factors that influence which populations, health conditions and interactions can be effectively managed by telehealth services and to develop tools and supports that assist health service providers to select the most appropriate telehealth services and modalities.
Key dates:
- Minimum data due on Wednesday 16 August 2023 17:00 AEST.
- Applications close on Wednesday 30 August 2023 17:00 AEST.

Invitation for public submissions: Australian Clinical Guideline for Physical Rehabilitation and Mobilisation in Adult Intensive Care Units
Monash University has released new guideline recommendations for public consultation from Thursday 13 July 2023 to Friday 18 August 2023.
Monash University will be seeking NHMRC approval of the guideline under section 14A of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992.

Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies 2023 - minimum data due soon
Minimum data for Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies applications is due Wednesday 26 July 2023 17:00 AEST.
Applicants must complete the required fields with correct information. Use of placeholder text will not be accepted.
For more information on minimum data requirements, refer to Appendix C in the Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Grants 2023 Guidelines (available on GrantConnect).
Failure to meet the minimum data requirements by the deadline will result in the application not proceeding. New applications cannot be started after the minimum data deadline.

- Applications close on Wednesday 9 August 2023 17:00 AEST.
For PRC2
Applications open on Thursday 27 July 2023.

Ideas Grants 2023 assessments are underway
Peer review of 2023 Ideas Grant applications started Wednesday 5 July 2023 and is due to end on Tuesday 1 August 2023.
NHMRC appreciates the willingness of so many people to make themselves available for peer review. Peer Review Mentors have been assigned to the 2023 Ideas Grant scheme. Peer reviewers who would like to seek advice from a mentor on the assessment phase, interpretation of the category descriptors, or procedural aspects of the peer review process should contact the Ideas Grant peer review secretariat.
Applicants, peer reviewers and Administering Institutions should direct technical Sapphire enquiries to help@nhmrc.gov.au.

It is also the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they meet all eligibility requirements, including limits on the number of times a person can be named as a Chief Investigator on applications submitted to a grant opportunity.

- their Sapphire account is active or access to Sapphire has been requested,
- their organisation is an approved MRFF Eligible Organisation before the close date,
