16 June 2021

Welcome to Tracker, NHMRC’s fortnightly newsletter with the latest information on major activities and funding opportunities.

Addressing Australia's national transfusion research priorities

World Blood Donor Day is held on 14 June each year. The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

In the past year, Australians gave more than 1.5 million blood donations to help patients across a wide range of medical conditions, including in cancer care, obstetrics, surgery and trauma.

Professor Erica Wood is head of the Transfusion Unit at Monash University. Her research describes how blood is used in Australia, and how its use can be improved and made safer and more cost-effective. Through registry data and clinical trials, and studies of novel blood products, Professor Wood and her team aim to improve access and transfusion outcomes for patients.

Ideas Grants 2021

Ideas Grants Peer Review Processes

NHMRC would like to thank the peer reviewers who completed their Conflicts of Interest (COI) and suitability declarations, and those who provided suitability against additional applications. These efforts all help to optimise the quality of our peer review process.

NHMRC appreciates the willingness of researchers to make themselves available for peer review. We are currently working through the declarations received and assigning the 2635 applications to more than 700 assessors based on the best available self-declared suitability matches following the suitability and COI survey outcomes.

NHMRC will notify assessors as soon as possible to confirm their appointments and which applications they have been assigned to assess.

Peer Review Key Dates*

  • Late June/early July 2021 peer reviewers assigned to applications (based on results of the COI and suitability survey)
  • July-September 2021 peer reviewers review applications and submit scores and comments against Ideas Grant assessment criteria for each allocated application.
  • December 2021 notification of outcomes.

* The Ideas Grant peer review process and timelines are subject to change. NHMRC will notify peer reviewers of any timing changes as soon as practicable.

If you have any questions, please contact your secretariat. Sapphire enquiries should be directed to the Research Help Centre via email help@nhmrc.gov.au.
