NHMRC funds high quality health and medical research, builds research capability, supports the translation of health and medical research into better health outcomes and promotes the highest standards of ethics and integrity in health and medical research. 

NHMRC encourages research investment across the four pillars of health research – biomedical, clinical, public health and health services, and funds both individuals and teams of the highest quality. It supports diversity of research and researchers across disciplines and sectors and fosters the career development of health and medical researchers.

NHMRC supports the pursuit of an Australian health system that is research-led, evidence-based, efficient and sustainable. It drives the translation of health and medical research into clinical practice, policy and health systems and encourages the effective commercialisation of research discoveries. NHMRC also maintains a strong integrity framework for research and guideline development, underpinning rigorous and ethical research and relevant and accurate guidelines, and promoting community trust.

As well as supporting research in health related basic science, NHMRC is responsive to national health priorities, to researchers, to consumer needs and community perspectives and to the requirements and directions of government. NHMRC also works closely with the Department of Health to support delivery of Medical Research Future Fund measures.

Our Graduate Program

The 12 month program commences in February and concludes in February the following year. Graduates commence at the APS 3 level and over the course of our graduate program, undertake rotations across two or three diverse sections of NHMRC. After successfully completing the program graduates advance to an APS 4 level and are then placed in a permanent role in a work area that matches their qualifications, skills and work interests. 

Our Primary office is in Canberra and successful applicants are expected to be locally based. Relocation assistance is available to those applicants that are required to move. NHMRC also has a small office located in Melbourne, and graduates may be offered a rotation in the Melbourne Office during the program.

Support and coaching

As one of our graduates you are provided with a strong support network to help meet any challenges faced throughout the program. This includes support from the Australian Public Service Commission’s (APSC's) Indigenous Liaison Officer, your workplace supervisor and a dedicated mentor to give you the best chance of success. 

Your supervisor will provide guidance and feedback on day-to-day work and help you understand how your work is contributing to the agency’s goals. Your mentor will help you guide your professional development towards a successful and rewarding career. You will also get to network with other graduates and develop professional relationships that will support you throughout your career.

Salary and Conditions

Graduates are engaged as a full-time ongoing APS employee under the Public Service Act 1999 at the APS3 level with a starting salary of $65,973 per annum plus superannuation. On successful completion of the program, graduates will advance to an APS4 level with an ongoing salary of $71,251 per annum plus superannuation.

Graduates must provide evidence of their Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage, meet APS requirements, including security and character clearances. They must hold, as a minimum, a qualification equivalent to a three-year Australian undergraduate degree and have completed a degree or post-graduate qualification no more than four years prior to the commencement of the program.

Living in Canberra

If you’re an interstate candidate and are successful in gaining a position on our program, you can expect to:

  • Relocate to Canberra – we offer relocation assistance
  • Receive up to three weeks temporary accommodation
  • Have your belongings moved and temporarily stored for up to three weeks while you find your new home.

Its reputation may precede it, but with a population in the vicinity of 390,000 Canberra really is much more than just Australia's public service hub and the seat of Australia's Parliament.

Canberra is Australia's largest inland city and is brimming with lifestyle, city services and world-class events and attractions. The shopping is great, the café culture is buzzing and its people are friendly. Canberra is home to a number of Australia’s premier cultural institutions such as the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), National Museum, National Library, numerous art galleries as well as more eccentric locations like Questacon. 

Canberrans also love their sport and have the highest participation rate in Australia—from lawn bowls to water polo and everything in between. Whether you are cheering on Canberra's top rugby league and rugby union teams, watching AFL, cricket or playing golf, bushwalking or cycling around our many bike trails, Canberra has the sports and recreational facilities to suit your needs.

We're also just a few hours' drive from the NSW snowfields, Sydney and the south coast's legendary beaches.

  • The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body provides direct advice to the ACT Government with the ambition of improving the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberrans, a step towards true reconciliation. 
  • Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community Services is an Aboriginal community controlled primary health care service operated by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of the ACT.
