Synopsis of publication:
The Health Advancement Standing Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council was commissioned to undertake a comprehensive review and analysis of past and current health promotion initiatives in Australia, and the systems that are responsible for directing and implementing action to promote health.
A specific consultation was undertaken with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as a major component of the review. A report has been developed, outlining the major findings of this review and recommendations for improving infrastructure supports for indigenous health promotion. The recommendations identify specific steps that need to be taken to build the capacity of the health sector to support the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health personnel working in partnerships with their communities, their peers, and with the mainstream health system to achieve improved Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
