Synopsis of publication:
In December 2002, the Federal Parliament passed the Research Involving Human Embryos Act 2002 and the Prohibition of Human Cloning for Reproduction Act 2002.
The legislation was introduced in response to community concerns, including ethical concerns, about scientific developments in relation to human reproduction and the use of human embryos. The Research Involving Human Embryos Act 2002 regulates certain uses of excess human embryos created through assisted reproductive technology (ART) and the Prohibition of Human Cloning for Reproduction Act 2002 prohibits certain unacceptable practices including human cloning.
This booklet has been developed to assist people to understand the NHMRC’s framework for monitoring compliance with the legislation and licence conditions.
