Synopsis of publication:
In December 2002, the Federal Parliament passed the Prohibition of Human Cloning for Reproduction Act 2002 and the Research Involving Human Embryos Act 2002.
The legislation has been introduced in response to community concerns, including ethical concerns, about scientific developments in relation to human reproduction and the utilisation of human embryos. The legislation prohibits certain unacceptable practices including human cloning and regulates certain uses of excess human embryos created through assisted reproductive technology (ART).
This booklet has been developed to assist people to understand the legislation. It provides general information about the two Acts, including prohibited practices and when licences are required. The booklet is intended to inform people with an interest in the Acts but will be particularly relevant for individuals and organisations affected by the legislation.
