Synopsis of publication:

In 1997, the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) released the publication, Acting on Australia's Weight: a strategic plan for the prevention of overweight and obesity. The publication is available in two versions:

  • A complete report that contains a strategic plan for the prevention of overweight and obesity and a series of technical background papers that review the evidence to support the strategic plan; and
  • A summary report that contains the strategic plan and a summary of the scientific evidence that supports the strategic plan.

The aim of the strategic plan is to prevent overweight and obesity by bringing about changes in the environments in which people live, work and study to make it easier for them to be physically active and consume a healthy diet.
