Scope for Prevention in Mental Health

Please note: This publication was rescinded on 29-02-2000

Preventive perspectives in the mental health arena need to be seen in two contexts - the promotion of good mental health and the prevention of mental health problems and mental disorders. The unwillingness to accept and develop preventive approaches has been based on the view that since definitive 'causes' of many mental disorders have not yet been found, prevention is impossible. This view ignores the fact that many preventive programs have been developed in the absence of definitive understanding of aetiology.
