Synopsis of publications:

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has released four discussion papers which offer information and advice to health professionals and to members of the public about the ethical aspects of organ and tissue donation and transplantation. The discussion papers are as follows:

1. Donating organs after death: ethical issues (catalogue no. 9610618) - provides information about organ donation and explores the issues involved in making a decision to become an organ donor after death. This paper also considers the issues confronting families who may be asked to make this decision when a relative has died.

2. Ethical issues in donating organs and tissues by living donors (catalogue no. 9610626) - considers the ethical issues involved in living donation, including family pressures, the medical considerations for the prospective donor and recipient, and the need for free and informed decision-making.

3. Ethical issues raised by allocation of transplant resources (catalogue no. 961060X) - sets out the current Australian policies for allocation of donated organs and tissues, raises a number of related ethical issues and notes more controversial issues such as the allocation of organs to overseas patients.

4. Certifying death: the brain function criterion (catalogue no. 9610596) - explains the concept of brain death and responds to a number of the more recent challenges to this definition of death.
