Synopsis of publication:
Thirty-seven percent of Australian men over 45 years of age report troublesome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and the frequency increases with age. These guidelines contain detailed recommendations for the physical evaluation, investigation and treatment of men presenting with uncomplicated LUTS.
They were developed to assist men, general practitioners and urologists to make decisions about the clinical management of uncomplicated lower urinary tract symptoms. While it is considered that the guidelines represent the best advice regarding the evaluation and management of men with uncomplicated LUTS, they cannot be considered as definitive. They provide a guide to management based on the best available evidence.
The guidelines were developed by an NHMRC Working Party on Voiding Dysfunction in Men and were originally published in 1996. Following review, minor amendments regarding the relationship between LUTS and early prostate cancer were endorsed by the NHMRC in February 2000.
