Synopsis of publication:

The intention of the NHMRC in publishing this report is to make accessible to health care professionals, patients and their carers and friends, scientific evidence which might be used in finding the best pathway to relief.

The report encourages a coordinated approach to the problem among all those involved in pain relief, from medical practitioners and health professionals to patients and their families. It suggests a variety of drug and non-drug options in treating acute pain arising from operations, trauma and injury, childbirth, migraine and back problems, cancer, HIV/AIDS and other illnesses.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has produced Acute Pain Management: Scientific Evidence, which reviews the available scientific evidence and information on this subject. Acute Pain Management: Information for Consumers and Acute Pain Management: Information for General Practitioner are summaries designed to allow quick reference to Acute Pain Management: Scientific Evidence.
