The emergency care community of practice

A Community of Practice (CoP) is a voluntary network of people who share information, build on existing knowledge, develop expertise and solve problems for a common purpose, driven by the interest of the community involved.

NICS has established an emergency care CoP for clinicians, health managers and health care professionals involved in the delivery of emergency care, so that they can share their knowledge and expertise to help close evidence-practice gaps and improve patient care.

Program objectives

  • To assist the uptake of evidence-based practice in emergency care
  • To provide access to evidence-based research information and practical solutions relevant to emergency care
  • To identify and work on common challenges facing the emergency care environment
  • To develop processes for making best use of good quality clinical care data

How do we select an area of emergency care?

Prominent clinicians from emergency medicine and nursing, primary care, health service management and ambulance services provide strategic oversight for the Emergency Care Community of Practice. A group of twelve dynamic medical and nursing professionals provide peer leadership by helping to set priorities and document important evidence-practice gaps in emergency care. In addition, there is consultation with members of the emergency care research community.
Currently, Dr Michael Yeoh works with NICS in the position of Clinical Advisor to the Emergency Care Community of Practice Program.

How can I get involved?

You are already on the website which is a great start. You can also register to receive the CoP e-newsletter which we issue on a regular basis to provide updates on the Emergency Care CoP. To register please e-mail emergencycare@nhmrc.gov.au

How do we communicate?

The CoP has five primary means of keeping members in touch with each other. Web pages, the blog site - teleconferences, common resources and newsletters ensure that news and experiences are shared between CoP members quickly and effectively.

Stories of improvement

Stories are a powerful and captivating way of sharing information, and often help to translate abstract concepts into concrete outcomes. If you are new to the CoP, start here to get a feel for the scope of activity.

Emergency care resources

One of the principal aims of the CoP is to make tools and resources available to members that others have found useful. On the CoP pages you will find a myriad of links, references to papers and systematic reviews, guidelines, protocols and other clinical tools.
