NICS is delighted by the recent appointment of Dr Gerry O’Callaghan, Chair of the National Organ Donation Collaborative (NODC) Advisory Committee, to an important role within the new Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority.

Gerry is a passionate advocate for developing a hospital-based multidisciplinary approach to improving organ donation and transplantation. As inaugural National Medical Director, he will contribute his wealth of experience as an intensivist and provide high level clinical leadership in the implementation of a national organ and tissue donation and transplantation reforms.

His new role will compliment his continuing involvement with the NODC and ensure the lessons learnt from this program lead to continued improvements in organ donation and transplantation across Australia.

Spotlight: NICS contributes to record organ donation rates 15 Dec 2008

Australia has seen a marked 31% increase in the number of organ donations in 2008 which coincides with the work done by NICS' National Organ Donation Collaborative (NODC). Figures released recently by the Australian and New Zealand Organ Donation Registry confirm that the rate of increase has been significantly higher amongst the 27 hospitals participating in the NODC, which was established in 2006 to improve best practice in organ donation. In December 2008, NODC hospitals contributed 75% of the total organ donation rate for that month.

researcher closeupSpotlight: NICS receives Australian Government Leadership award 8 Dec 2008

NICS received an Australian Government Leadership Network-Victoria award on Friday, 5th December in Melbourne, for leadership demonstrated in the National Organ Donation Collaborative and in developing and delivering the Fight Flu campaign.

The award acknowledges outstanding leadership or innovation within Australian Government agencies. Sue Huckson, Director of the Effective Practice Program was recognised for her work on the National Organ Donation Collaborative and Meredith Cameron, NICS Communications Manager was recognised for her development and delivery of the Fight Flu campaign.

NHMRC 2007-2008 Annual Report released 21 Nov 2008

Read all about the highlights of the work of NICS and the NHMRC in the 2007-2008 Annual Report including:

  • the launch of the NICS Stop the Clot program into private hospitals by the Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon. Nicola Roxon MP,
  • the success of NICS Fellowships in building national capacity in evidence implementation including profiles of three alumni and,
  • the impact of the National Organ Donation Collaborative in working with hospital teams to improve the organ donation process.

Fight Flu 2008 campaign launched 25 Feb 2009

The 2008 Fight Flu campaign aims to increase influenza immunisation in at risk groups under 65 years of age and in health care workers.

Closing evidence-practice gaps in emergency care

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has published its latest Emergency Care Evidence in Practice brochures, highlighting evidence-practice gaps of particular relevance within Australian emergency departments.

Endorsed by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia, and the Australian College of Emergency Nursing, each brochure highlights the importance of the topic, summarises the best available evidence, and outlines current practice and implications for emergency care practice.
