Interventions to improve uptake of venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in hospitals

This 2003 literature review was commissioned by NICS and undertaken by the Australian Safety and Efficacy Register of New Interventional Procedures - Surgical.

The review is part of the NICS venous thromboembolism prevention program and was commissioned to inform the process of development of an intervention likely to be effective in changing clinical behaviour to be more in line with clinical practice guidelines’recommendations.

Specifically, the review looks for strategies that have been effective in increasing the appropriate use of pharmacological and mechanical measures to prevent venous thromboembolism in hospitalised patients, and secondarily, whether there is information on the cost effectiveness of such strategies.

This review was later published in the Annals of Surgery.
