What are the characteristics of health care organisations that promote innovation and the uptake of evidence? In this 2003 review NICS commissioned the Health Management Group at La Trobe University to identify the hallmarks of excellence in both healthcare and unrelated industries, and to discover the strategies that are available to change a health care organisation’s capacity to deliver evidence-based care.

» Institutional approaches to pain assessment & management

This 2003 systematic review was commissioned prior to the commencement of the NICS pain management project. It seeks to identify strategies that have been successful in introducing and sustaining institutional strategies to pain assessment and management.

» Interventions to improve uptake of venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in hospitals

This 2003 literature review was commissioned by NICS and undertaken by the Australian Safety and Efficacy Register of New Interventional Procedures - Surgical. The review looks for strategies that have been effective in increasing the appropriate use of pharmacological and mechanical measures to prevent venous thromboembolism in hospitalised patients, and secondarily, whether there is information on the cost effectiveness of such strategies.

» The impact of the internet on consumers health behaviour

The internet has become a vital source of information for many people, and the trend towards greater use of information technology in health care decision-making is increasing. In 2003 NICS commissioned the Centre for Evidence Based Practice at the University of Queensland to undertake an evidence-based assessment of effective web-based strategies for changing consumer behaviour.
