Sponsorship guidelines

Please note that the NHMRC is unable to commit to sponsorship requests for the 2011–12 financial year until the NHMRC budget has been determined for 2011–12.

Each year NHMRC allocates a limited amount of money to sponsor events and/or conferences. Sponsorship proposals should be received by 1 May.

NHMRC receives numerous proposals requesting sponsorship. In assessing these proposals, there must be very clear benefits for the NHMRC in providing monetary support.

Sponsorship proposals will be assessed based on merit with each proposal assessed against the following selection criteria:

  • Is it a major scientific conference or event covering the four pillars—biomedical, clinical, public health, and health services research?
  • Does it support a stronger, Australian health research administration sector?
  • Is it a national event aimed at building the capacity of the health and medical research workforce?

In all cases, value for money must be assessed, including whether participant contributions are adequate and conference costs reasonable, so that sponsorship is justified for the NHMRC.

As well as value for money, applications for NHMRC sponsorship are also evaluated on the following:

  • The role the conference/event plays in promoting the best and most relevant health and medical research.
  • The subject area of the event and how closely it aligns with NHMRC’s objectives and strategic direction.
  • Numbers of delegates expected to attend and of those, are they NHMRC stakeholders?
  • Is the event local, national or international?
  • What, if any, participation will the NHMRC have in the event e.g. input into the planning, provision of a speaker etc.
  • What services will the NHMRC receive in return for supporting the event?

Please note that the NHMRC does not provide sponsorship for dinners, cocktail functions, social and fundraising events, memberships, or the publication of ‘coffee-table books’.
