As you are aware, we opened the funding rounds for Project Grants, Practitioner, Research Fellowships, and Centres of Research Excellence earlier this week. The policy documents, Advice and Instructions to Applicants and offline templates are available on the NHMRC website and in the RGMS Library.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is deeply saddened by the death of outstanding medical researcher Professor Frank Fenner at age 95.
Amongst a life time of achievement, Professor Fenner was best known for his groundbreaking research which lead to the eradication of smallpox and the introduction of the myxoma virus to eradicate Australia’s rabbit plagues.

An NHMRC supported project is featured in the latest issue of science journal Nature.

A team of Melbourne and London researchers have shown how a protein called perforin punches holes in, and kills, rogue cells in our bodies. Their discovery of the mechanism of this assassin is published today in the science journal Nature.

In the 2010 budget the Government reaffirmed its commitment to NHMRC’s forward estimates. There were no changes in government policy on the Medical Research Expenditure Account (MREA).

I wish to apologise again to the thousands of researchers and research administrators who suffered frustration and disruptions to their professional and family lives due to the unsatisfactory performance of RGMS.
I have put a number of actions in place:
I have commissioned an independent review of RGMS to identify the causes of the problems;
Additional servers will be in place by the end of April 2010 to deal with peaks in load on the system; and
