Top researchers recognised with NHMRC Excellence Awards

Top ranked researchers investigating cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases, sexually transmitted infection and hospital-acquired pathogens have been recognised for their outstanding contribution by Australia’s peak body for health and medical research.

The National Health and Medical Research Council has presented 20 Excellence Awards to the highest ranking applicants in their funding schemes.

“The Excellence Awards recognise and reward achievement in the highly competitive health and medical research field. This year’s award winners represent the top 20 of the 5236 applications peer reviewed for funding in 2012,” NHMRC CEO Professor Warwick Anderson said.

This year, NHMRC has awarded excellence awards for top applicants in:

  • Project, Program and Development grants
  • Career Development Fellowships (CDF) - clinical, population health, industry and biomedical categories
  • Research Fellowship.

Excellence awards celebrating the achievements of renowned Australian medical researchers have also been awarded:

  • Frank Fenner Early Career Fellowship - top ranked applicant
  • Elizabeth Blackburn Fellowship - highest ranked female researchers in clinical, public health and biomedical categories
  • Gustav Nossal Scholarship - highest ranked applicant in medical and dental post graduate scholarships.
