Fifty three million dollars of National Health and Medical Research Council grants announced today by Mark Butler, Minister for Health and Ageing, will enable 120 Victorian researchers to continue their essential work.
This funding adds to the $211.9 million announced by Mr Butler last week, for Victorian NHMRC Project, IRIISS and Equipment Grants, totalling $265.6 million.
“Victoria has continued its position as Australia’s predominant state for health and medical research, winning over 46% of the national funding for these grants” Mr Butler said.
“Today’s announcement of $53. million of fellowships for successful researchers will enable these researchers to continue their careers contributing to the health of Australians” Mr Butler said.
“These dedicated people work in areas as diverse as basic science, mental health and indigenous health.
“Some combine research careers with work as clinicians, or in health policy, allowing research to be put into practice quickly. Others focus on the basic science that is the foundation of our scientific knowledge.”
Professor Brian Dean of the Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria will receive a$630,505 NHMRC Research Fellowship to develop a better understanding of the chemical basis of common mental health disorders, including schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder.
