Over nine million dollars of National Health and Medical Research Council grants announced today by Mark Butler, Minister for Health and Ageing, will enable 24 South Australian researchers to continue their important work.

This funding adds to the $33.6 million announced by Mr Butler last week, for South Australian NHMRC Project, IRIISS and Equipment Grants, totalling $43.2 million.

“Today’s announcement of $9.6 million of fellowships for successful researchers will enable these researchers to continue their careers contributing to the health of Australians” Mr Butler said.

“These dedicated people work in areas as diverse as basic science, mental health and indigenous health.

“Some combine research careers with work as clinicians, or in health policy, allowing research to be put into practice quickly. Others focus on the basic science that is the foundation of our scientific knowledge.”

Doctor Shiwani Sharma of Flinders University has won an NHMRC Project Grant to lead a team of researchers investigating genes linked to age-related cataracts. Their work will aid in understanding the environmental impacts that work with the genes to cause potential blindness.

“This research work is a first step in addressing several of the major causes of age-related cataracts, a problem that has the potential to increase blindness in our ageing population” Mr Butler said.

The Australian government has, through the NHMRC, awarded grants in South Australia including:

  • 59 Project Grants, worth $32.7 million
  • 13 Training (Postdoctoral) Fellowships worth $4 million
  • 3 Career Development Awards worth $1.2 million
  • 1 Practitioner Fellowships worth $428,869
  • 5 Research Fellowships worth $3.7 million
  • 2 TRIP (Translating Research into Practice) Fellowships worth $264,000
