Over seventeen million dollars of National Health and Medical Research Council grants announced today by Mark Butler, Minister for Health and Ageing, will enable 39 Queensland researchers to continue their essential work.
This funding adds to the $56.1 million announced by Mr Butler last week, for Queensland NHMRC Project, IRIISS and Equipment Grants, totalling $73.8 million.
“Today’s announcement of $17.7 million of fellowships for successful researchers will enable these researchers to continue their careers contributing to the health of Australians” Mr Butler said.
“These dedicated people work in areas as diverse as basic science, mental health and indigenous health.
“Some combine research careers with work as clinicians, or in health policy, allowing research to be put into practice quickly. Others focus on the basic science that is the foundation of our scientific knowledge.”
Professor John McGrath at the Queensland Brain Institute will work with colleagues in Scotland and Denmark to build on earlier findings that show pregnant women low in vitamin D have a higher risk of having children who develop schizophrenia.
“This research may lead to better and simpler ways of preventing schizophrenia by better understanding the role vitamin D takes during pregnancy, potentially saving thousands of people from this disabling disease,” Mr Butler said.
