Over thirty two million dollars of National Health and Medical Research Council grants announced today by Mark Butler, Minister for Health and Ageing, will enable 84 NSW researchers to continue their essential work.

This funding adds to the $108.4 million announced by Mr Butler last week, for NSW NHMRC Project, IRIISS and Equipment Grants, totalling $140.9 million.

“Today’s announcement of $32.5 million of fellowships for successful researchers will enable these researchers to continue their careers contributing to the health of Australians” Mr Butler said.

“These dedicated people work in areas as diverse as basic science, mental health and indigenous health.

“Some combine research careers with work as clinicians, or in health policy, allowing research to be put into practice quickly. Others focus on the basic science that is the foundation of our scientific knowledge.”

Dr Simon Lewis of the University of Sydney will receive a NHMRC Practitioner Fellowship of $428,869,000 to work with his team to use advanced brain scanning techniques to investigate brain functioning in Parkinson’s Disease.

“The findings from this research will be built into clinical practice and therapies, giving new hope to those living with the effects of this degenerative disease” Mr Butler said.

The Australian government has, through the NHMRC, awarded grants in NSW including:
• 186 Project Grants, worth $101.4 million
• 41 Training (Postdoctoral) Fellowships worth $12.2 million
• 18 Career Development Awards worth $7.2 million
• 8 Practitioner Fellowships worth $3.3 million
