Sixteen outstanding achievers have been recognised by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for their significant contributions to health and medical research.
Innovation, leadership, and considerable scientific research were recognised by Australia’s peak body for health and medical research at an inaugural event in Canberra.
Announced by the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, the awards included acknowledgements to Prof Iain McGregor for studies on the long term effects of the party drug MDMA; Prof Brian Cooke’s malaria studies; A/Prof Sandra Eggers work on ethical healthcare of prisoners; and Dr Rebecca Ivers’ research programs on road traffic injury prevention.
NHMRC CEO Professor Warwick Anderson was delighted with the high calibre of candidates for the inaugural awards.
‘Australia is internationally renowned for its contribution to medical science, and we have a long history of great achievement in the field.
‘The NHMRC would like to recognise and thank those researchers for making outstanding inroads, and hopefully encourage the next generation to be the new great minds in Australian research’.
