Proceedings of Complementary Medicine Forum now available

The record of proceedings of the Complementary Medicine: Future Directions Forum, held in Sydney on 21 -22 November 2006, are now available.

The Forum was co-hosted by the NHMRC, the NSW Office of Science and Medical Research (OSMR) and the Centre for Complementary Medicine Research at the University of Western Sydney (COMPLEMED) and brought together researchers, policy makers and industry representatives.  The program included presentations from Professor Warwick Anderson, NHMRC CEO, Mr Marcus Blackmore AM, Executive Chairman of Blackmores Ltd, and Professor Jack Killen, Director, Office of International Health Research, National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, National Institutes of Health, USA.  Additional material, including the video presentation made by Professor Killen and copies of presentations made by other speakers at the Forum will be posted on the OSMR and NHMRC websites in the near future.

Advice to RAOs and Researchers

The NHMRC has recently provided research funding data for all grants awarded over the period 2000 to 2007 on our website. The release of further funding data across disease areas and addressing the NHMRC Strategic Plan as well as information about current research activity and recent research outcomes will be taking place over the coming months.

APRIL 2007

Palliative Care Research Program Round 3:
Call for Applications for Research Development Grants

Applications are invited from emerging investigators and research teams to undertake research projects that will inform one or more of the following four broad areas related to palliative care:

  • Symptom assessment and management in palliative care
  • Families and caregiver support
  • Psychosocial support, including bereavement
  • Models of care in palliation particularly in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Up to $740,000 is available over two years to fund research that will develop capacity within the palliative care research community, and inform policy and practice.  A maximum of $50,000 per grant is available.

COMMONWEALTH HEALTH MINISTER'S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN HEALTH AND MEDICAL RESEARCH

The Hon Tony Abbott MP has called for nominations for the Commonwealth Health Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research, 2007.

The Award is open to researchers who have completed their first PhD or MD within the last fifteen years.  The annual Award, made in recognition of outstanding individual achievement in health and medical research in Australia, is now in its eighth year and consists of $50,000 and a presentation medal.  The announcement of this year's winner will be in June 2007.
