SPECIAL CALL FOR RESEARCH APPLICATIONS INTO COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE
This call provides an opportunity for Australian researchers to submit proposals for excellent and innovative research that will generate evidence and increase knowledge in the area of Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Total funding of up to $5 million is available for this initiative. The applications for this call will close 30 March 2007.

DEMENTIA RESEARCH GRANTS PROGRAM
Call for applications - Round 2 Priority Driven Research Grants
The Dementia Research Program is a joint initiative between the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the Department of Health and Ageing. The program is part of the Australian Government’s Helping Australians with dementia and their carers ‘Making Dementia a National Health Priority’ initiative.
A total of up to $11.5 million is available for research on identified gaps in applied and translational research that aims to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers

GENERAL PRACTICE CLINICAL RESEARCH PROGRAMCall for applications - Round 2 Priority Driven Research Grants
The General Practice Clinical Research Program is funded under the Australian Government’s Primary Health Care Research, Evaluation and Development (PHC RED) Strategy (Phase 2). The broad theme area for this round of funding is 'Chronic Disease'. Applications are invited that are policy-relevant and significant both in terms of disease burden and the potential to support better clinical practice.

Request for Application - Immune Tolerance
Islet transplantation as a therapy for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D)
Islet transplantation as a therapy for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) has been an important focus of JDRF support, and significant progress has occurred in recent years. As such, islet transplantation holds much promise for restoring normal blood glucose in individuals with T1D, but the success of this approach is dependent upon effective therapies for tolerance induction to prevent islet allograft rejection.

Dementia Research Workshop
The National Health and Medical Research Council together with the Department of Health and Ageing will conduct a workshop in Adelaide in late November on Policy Relevance and Methodology for potential applicants for strategic awards in dementia research. The Workshop will be formally advertised in the press and on the NHMRC website on Saturday 28 October.

» The New Australia Fellowship for Health and Medical Research
Invitation to apply - funding to commence in 2007
The Australia Fellowship is for outstanding senior health and medical researchers across all disciplines and will consist of a one line budget of $800,000 per annum for five years. Applications are invited from leading researchers both in Australia and around the world.

The Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre (DVDC) is inviting organisations to submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) for funding in mid 2007 that have the potential to meet the DVDC's mission. The deadline for EOIs is 6 November 2006.

» Public Consultation Paper on the Advisory Council on Intellectual Property (ACIP) report on patents and experimental use
To assist in developing the government response to the ACIP Report, Patents and Experimental Use, IP Australia is seeking specific comments on the inclusion of an experimental use exemption into the Patents Act. In particular, they are seeking comment from interested members of the public on questions contained in page 9 of the consultation paper by 29 September 2006. » Special Program Grants in Type 1 Diabetes now open
Expressions of Interest are being invited for the Special Program grants in Type 1 Diabetes for funding in 2007. The deadline for the Expressions of Interest is 4 October 2006.

Up to $1.8 million is available for grants to fund research that will develop capacity within the palliative care research community. Projects funded through this research program will generate evidence that will lead to improved quality of life, improved clinical practice and better informed policy development.

» International Human Frontier Science Program Fellowship scheme now open.
Applications are now open for the international Human Frontier Science Program fellowship scheme to commence in 2007. The deadline for the long-term and cross-disciplinary fellowship program is 31 August 2006.
Australia, through the NHMRC, became a member of this internationally renowned program in 2004. The Human Frontier Science Program supports novel, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on the complex mechanisms of living organisms. The Program has an interdisciplinary focus and fellowships are offered to scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science, engineering as well as biology to focus on the problems at the frontier of the life sciences.

» Submissions from the Second Round of Community Consultation on the Review of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research
Authors of submissions were asked for permission to upload their submissions on the NHMRC's web-site. Of the 183 submitters, 148 gave their permission for their comments on the second draft to be placed on the website. These are displayed below as either organisational or private submissions.

» Short Term Exchange/Study scheme
Applications are now open for Short Term Exchange/Study schemes to commence in 2007.
The Tripartite Agreement signed in 2002, by the CIHR, HRC NZ and NHMRC aims to support research in the area of Indigenous peoples' health, with the goal of improving the health of Indigenous peoples' in these three countries.
One of the expected outcomes of the Tripartite Agreement includes enabling international exchange programs for researchers and research students involved in Indigenous peoples' health.
The Short Term Exchange/Study scheme was developed in response to interest expressed by researchers to develop links with Canada and New Zealand.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) HGAC held its first public meeting with Community and Stakeholder Organisations to consider issues related to Human Genetics in Australia in Melbourne on 8 June 2006.

The recent Federal Budget committed further funds of almost $63 million to a range of Palliative Care strategies. It is anticipated that an investment in Palliative Care Research to support mainstreaming of this research area into other funding sources such as the general NHMRC funding rounds will be part of this program.

» National Ethics Application Form
The NHMRC is pleased to announce that the National Ethics Application Form (NEAF) is now available for public use. NEAF is a dynamic, interactive, web-based tool for researchers of all disciplines to complete research ethics proposals for submission to Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs).
To access NEAF, please go to the independent NEAF website at www.neaf.gov.au. This website also provides you with a map of the NEAF structure (Quick Reference Map) and information about the development of NEAF.

» A Healthy Start to Life for All Australians Strategic Award- call for Expressions of Interest
The NHMRC will provide up to $5 million over 5 years to support innovative research that has an interdisciplinary and inter sectoral approach to child health.
Expressions of Interest are due by 5.00 pm AEST 10 July 2006 for funding beginning in 2007.

» Research Committee National Roadshow May/June 2006 (PDF, 75kb) ![]()
RC will be conducting a national road-show during May and June of this year. The purpose of the road-show is to provide an opportunity for RC to discuss intended changes to NHMRC's research funding processes with researchers and research administrators alike. In addition to discussing the changes to NHMRC processes, the RC will take the opportunity to present international funding opportunities - Human Frontier Science Program and European Union.

Information on the Haemophilia Foundation Australia's Research Grants for 2006 Applications are invited for grants for medical, scientific or social research relating to haemophilia, von Willebrand disorder and related coagulation disorders, and/or medically acquired blood borne viruses.
An amount of $75,000 will be allocated and grants will be made to one or more projects in this 2006 funding round.

The Prime Minister's Prize for Science $300,000 is awarded for an outstanding specific achievement or series of related achievements in any area of sicence advancing human welfare or benefitting society. It is awarded to an individual or jointly to up to 4 individuals.

» Launch of pilot National Ethics Application Form for external testing
The NHMRC is pleased to announce the commencement of the external usability testing phase of the new National Ethics Application Form (NEAF). NEAF is an electronic, web-based form for use by researchers in any research discipline when submitting research proposals to one or more Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) for review. It is hoped that all Australian HRECs will accept submissions from researchers using this form.
Close to 300 people have registered to test NEAF, comprising of researchers, sponsors, HREC and research administrators, and HREC members. External testing concludes on 3 March 2006. NEAF is then expected to become available to all in mid to late March 2006.
The NHMRC is making NEAF available with the support of the Australian Research Council and the Australian Vice Chancellors' Committee.

» Revised Application Form and Closing Date for National Research Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases
Researchers and RAOs preparing applications for funding under the National Research Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases program are advised to check for changes to the application form and instructions on the NHMRC web site.
If the earlier version of the form has been successfully completed, there is no need to complete the new version since the changes to the form are mainly structural. However, recognizing the inconvenience and delays that may have been caused by the original form, the deadline for applications has been extended to cob Monday 13 February 2006.
