New privacy guidelines for health practitioners on disclosing genetic information
NHMRC, in cooperation with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC), today released new guidelines to assist health practitioners in making decisions about disclosing genetic information to their patient’s genetic relatives.

Funding for research into H1N1 Influenza 09 (human swine flu influenza)29 May 2009
The Australian Government, through NHMRC, will provide $7 million for research into the H1NI influenza 09 virus (human swine influenza). The funds will help researchers learn more about the properties of the virus and its potential to become more virulent and how best to avoid and treat infection. This research will commence in June 2009 with results expected to be reported by December 2009.
From mid next week interested health and medical researchers can access further information and applications for research funding mid next week on www.nhmrc.gov.au. Expressions of interest closed on Monday 22nd June.

Psychogeriatric Research Grants 5 Feb 2009
The Hon Justine Elliot MP, Minister for Ageing, has announced a call for applications for research grants into the care and treatment for psychogeriatric disorders. The applications, totalling $2 million, will be administered through NHMRC. Psychogeriatric disorders include psychiatric conditions that predate the ageing process, such as depression or schizophrenia, as well as the various form of dementia that can result from ageing.
NHMRC 2009 Draft Alcohol Guidelines Still to be Approved1 FEB 2009
The National Health and Medical Research Council are currently completing ‘2009 Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol’.
These Guidelines have not yet been issued as they will be reviewed by the Council of the NHMRC in early February. If approved, they will be released within the next few weeks.

Healthy funding for healthy hearts29 Jan 2009
Healthy hearts from the embryo, through childhood and into old age are the aim of research funded by the Australian Government, through NHMRC, announced today by the Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing, Senator Jan McLucas. The Treasurer the Hon Wayne Swan MP has announced NHMRC grants totalling over $48 million. These funds will continue to support the next generation of health and medical researchers, through Postdoctoral Training Fellowships, Postgraduate Scholarship Awards and the NHMRC-European Union Collaborative Health Research Grants Scheme. The recipients of these awards are the future of health and medical research in Australia.
