JUVENILE DIABETES VACCINE TRIAL COMMENCES
Children at risk of contracting juvenile diabetes may soon be vaccinated against the disease by administering insulin through a nasal spray device if a Melbourne based clinical trial proves successful.
The Commonwealth Government, through the National Health and Medical Research Council has committed $5 million to the Intranasal Insulin Clinical Trial. The vaccine has been developed by the Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre at the University of Melbourne in partnership with the New York based Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

$4.4 MILLION IN DEMENTIA RESEARCH GRANTS
Studies on the effect of vitamin D supplementation on dementia, and new models of care for Indigenous Australians with dementia, are among $4.4 m in National Health and Medical Research Council dementia grants announced by the Minister for Ageing, Senator Santo Santoro.
The grants are part of a $320.6 million 2005 Budget initiative, Helping Australians with dementia and their carers — making dementia a national health priority. Eight projects have been funded over three years.

NEW RESEARCH GRANTS TARGET OBESITY
The Commonwealth Government has awarded $3.4 million in National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) funding for three innovative projects focusing on preventing obesity in Australians.

RESEARCH GRANTS TARGET SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC FACTORS ON HEALTH
The Commonwealth Government has announced $9.7 million in funding for eight innovative projects focusing on social, economic and environmental factors impacting on the health and wellbeing of Australians.

$529 MILLION IN HEALTH AND MEDICAL RESEARCH GRANTS
The Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Tony Abbott has announced $529 million in health and medical research funding for grants commencing in 2007.
This funding boost, through the NHMRC will support research in Australian universities, hospitals and medical research institutes and is the first time that annual funding for health and medical research grants has exceeded the $500 million mark.

WA to get $6.2 million funding boost for asbestos-related diseases
The Minister for Health and Ageing has announced $6.2 million in Commonwealth Government funding through the NHMRC, to establish a new National Research Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases at the University of Western Australia.

Community participation encouraged in new guide
A new publication released by the NHMRC, Guide to effective participation of consumers and communities in developing and disseminating health information, acknowledges that consumers bring a unique perspective that complements the health professionals view, resulting in balanced and relevant information that is more likely to meet consumer needs.

Ethics of Indigenous health research explored in new guide
The rights, responsibilities and expectations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples participating in or conducting human research are highlighted in a new guide released today by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) at the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service in Melbourne.
Keeping research on track: a guide for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples about health research ethics shows how Indigenous communities can get the most out of health research.

NHMRC seeks the community’s views on organ and tissue donation
The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has released draft guidelines on organ and tissue donation, for public consultation.
These guidelines focus on donation during the donors' lifetime and are not addressing consent to organ donation after death. They are being developed to help potential donors and their families make informed decisions about organ and tissue donation, and to help health professionals better understand the ethical principles involved.

Health care communication under NHMRC microscope
Good communication about the benefits and risks of medical tests and treatments leads to better decisions through better understanding, according to a new publication released by the National Health and Medical Research Council. The new training tool, Making Decisions about Tests & Treatments: principles for better communication, is a one-stop educational resource designed to improve interaction and decision making between health consumers and professionals.

$10 million to develop 'thinking' robots
New cross-disciplinary research that brings together neuroscience, artificial intelligence, robotics and computer science will receive $10 million over the next five years under the Australian Government's Thinking Systems initiative.
The projects, funded jointly by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), have been announced by the Minister for Education, Science and Training, Ms Julie Bishop, and the Minister for Health and Ageing, Mr Tony Abbott.

$10 million Ageing Well, Ageing Productively grants announced
Crucial research into ageing, jointly funded by the NHMRC and the Australian Research Council, has been announced by the Minister for Ageing, Senator Santo Santoro, and the Minister for Education, Science and Training, Ms Julie Bishop.
Six projects have been funded over five years under the government's National Research Priority Area Promoting and Maintaining Good Health and the priority goal Ageing Well, Ageing Productively.

New Embryo Research Licensing Committee announced
The Minister for Ageing today announced the appointment of members of the new Embryo Research Licensing Committee.
The Embryo Research Licensing Committee administers the Commonwealth laws that regulate human embryo research and prohibit human cloning and other unacceptable practices related to assisted reproductive technologies.
Chaired by Professor Jock Findlay, Deputy Director of Prince Henry's Institute of Medical Research, the Committee members represent expertise in reproductive sciences, ethics, law, consumer health issues relating to disability and disease, consumer issues relating to assisted reproductive technology (ART), embryology and ART. The process of appointing a member of the Australian Health Ethics Committee to the Embryo Research Licensing Committee is in progress.

NHMRC Research Committee Announced
The Commonwealth Government today announced the new membership of the National Health and Medical Research Council's Research Committee to be chaired by Professor James Best.
Professor Best is currently Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne. He has nearly 30 years experience in biomedical research, particularly in the areas of glucose metabolism and diabetes.
Joining Professor Best is the 2006 Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Frazer.

Australian Health Ethics Committee Members Appointed
The appointment of members to the prestigious Australian Health Ethics Committee- a Principal Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council was recently announced by the Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Tony Abbott.
The chairman of the new committee is Professor Colin Thomson. Professor Thomson is a solicitor and barrister in the Supreme Courts of NSW and the ACT, and has been a member of AHEC in two previous three-year terms, including as deputy chair in the 2000-2003 triennium.

New National Health Committee announced
The NHMRC's newly-appointed National Health Committee has been announced, to provide independent evidence-based health advice, guidelines and standards to governments and the community.
Chaired by Alzheimer's expert from the University of Melbourne, Professor Colin Masters, the new Committee incorporates a diverse range of expertise to cover issues of major concern.

Cultural Awareness-Key to a Healthier Australia
Governments and health services may be better equipped to tackle Australia's future health issues, including overweight and obesity, if they integrate cultural issues into the planning and delivery of health care and services, according to national guidelines released today by the National Health and Medical Research Council.

New Human Genetics Advisory Committee announced
A reappointed Human Genetics Advisory Committee has been announced to serve for the next three years at the National Health and Medical Research Council.
The Committee provides ongoing high-level advice to the government on current and emerging issues in human genetics, and on the social, ethical and legal implications of human genetics and related technologies.
Chaired by Professor Ron Trent, Professor of Molecular Genetics at the University of Sydney, the Committee members represent health, medical, and community groups with an appreciation of the impact human genetic technology may have in a wide range of applications.

Minister Abbott announces new Council
The Minister for Health and Ageing today announced the appointment of members of the new National Health and Medical Research Council.
The 19 appointed members will serve for the next three years, and will be chaired by Professor Michael Good, Director of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research.
Mr Abbott said the membership reflects a high calibre of expertise and experience from diverse fields in Australia, including professional and scientific colleges and associations, universities, and business and consumer groups.

Eye scan for heart disease wins Minister's award for excellence
Melbourne researcher Associate Professor Tien Wong, 38, has won the Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research for 2006.
Associate Professor Wong, from the Centre for Eye Research Australia, University of Melbourne, led a team that has developed a novel method of predicting cardiovascular disease by scanning the eyes for blood vessel damage.
