AHEC guidelines for research involving humans
Under the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992, AHEC has statutory responsibility for developing guidelines for the ethical conduct of medical research involving humans. AHEC also produces ethical guidelines covering specific aspects of health and medical research.
Clinical trials involving humans
A 'clinical trial' tests a therapeutic, preventive or diagnostic intervention. Clinical trials are conducted in accordance with ethical guidelines and in certain circumstances in accordance with legislation.
Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs)
An organisation's HREC reviews research proposals if these involves humans. Organisations register their HRECs with NHMRC.

The National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007) consists of a series of primary ethical guidelines for researchers, HRECs, and organisations.
