Communicating with patients
Doctors' communication resource kit launched
The kit comprises two useful booklets in a practical binder titled General Guidelines for Medical Practitioners on Providing Information to Patients (the ‘General Guidelines’ booklet) and, Communicating with Patients: Advice for Medical Practitioners (the ‘Advice’ booklet).
The ‘General Guidelines’ booklet focuses on the type of information that doctors need to discuss with patients when planning treatment including information on risks, and, restricted circumstances when immediate provision of information may not be desirable.
The ‘Advice’ booklet outlines communication methods that doctors need to consider when discussing treatment with patients. Issues covered by the kit include how to communicate well, the possible consequences of poor communication, and, how to handle particular situations.
The documents are available from Ethics in Research - Human publications.
