Researchers who perform research involving humans must have their proposals reviewed by an HREC. If the researcher does not belong to an organisation which has an HREC, a request for the services of an HREC from another organisation will need to be made.
Overview
Some researchers do not belong to an organisation which has an HREC. This situation typically arises in smaller organisations or where researchers are not affiliated with an organisation, eg independent researchers, medical specialists in private practice. Researchers nevertheless are required to have their research projects reviewed, approved and monitored by an HREC.
Researchers in this situation should approach an organisation which has an HREC and seek to establish an arrangement whereby the HREC agrees to act on behalf of the independent researcher. Organisations agreeing to provide ethical reviews on behalf of independent researchers sometimes require indemnification and/or charge a fee for service.
