Synopsis

This report begins with a discussion of the philosophies underpinning the Strategy to improve the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by improving the education and training of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce.

A summary of factors leading to the poor health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; the development of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce; and information about a number of nationwide initiatives regarding workforce recruitment, training, occupational and professional development, and health service policy, planning and development, provides the background for subsequent consideration for the strategic issues and action areas for the Strategy.

These strategic issues and areas for action are considered in the main body of the document and formed the basis for the development of the Strategic Framework which concludes the document.
