Synopsis
The Health Promoting Schools Working Party was established to assess the most effective ways to create healthy environments in schools.
The concept of linking 'health promotion' and 'environment' has emerged over the past two decades. It is now widely recognised that the health status of individuals and populations is greatly influenced by the economic, social and physical environments in which they live, work and play.
Health has formed a part of the school curriculum in many countries for the past 20 years, and considerable information exists in relation to school health programs. The report is a summary of the available evidence on what constitutes effective practice for promoting health in the school setting, and identifies what is needed to fill the current gaps in knowledge. The report also proposes a framework for comprehensive school health programs which address the following elements: curriculum, teaching and learning; school organisation; school ethos; environment; school-home-community interaction; and interaction with health services.
