Synopsis
The Prohibition of Human Cloning for Reproduction Act 2002 and the Research Involving Human Embryos Act 2002 were introduced in response to community concerns, including ethical concerns, about scientific developments in relation to human reproduction and the use of human embryos. These Acts prohibit certain unacceptable practices, including human cloning for reproduction, and regulates certain uses of excess human embryos created through Assisted Reproductive Technology. The NHMRC Embyro Research Licensing Committee issues licences for research involving human embryos, and monitors compliance with the legislation.
The Information Kit is divided into five chapters, covering different aspects of the NHMRC Embryo Research Licensing Committee’s activities:
- Chapter 1 – Overview of the regulatory framework
- Chapter 2 – Applying for a licence
- Chapter 3 – Information for licence holders
- Chapter 4 – Information for human research ethics committees
- Chapter 5 – Monitoring compliance with the legislation
