Dioxins are a group of chemicals that are highly persistent in the environment, and can become absorbed into the body fat of animals. If exposure to dioxins is sufficiently extensive, these chemicals can cause a range of toxic effects in animals and humans, including skin lesions, reproductive disorders and cancer.
Synopsis
As part of the Commonwealth Government's National Dioxins Program, the NHMRC in collaboration with the Therapeutic Goods Administration, has undertaken a review of the health risks arising from exposure to dioxins in the enviornment. This review provides a recommended tolerable monthly intake of dioxins in Australia.
