This Section identifies, where possible, potential diseases for each species. However native species carry a vast range of diseases, some of which are zoonotic (transmissable to humans).

Synopsis

The aim of this Section is to provide information on current practices for maintaining captive colonies. The information in this Section is intended as a guide only and is not intended to be exhaustive. Prospective investigators are therefore advised to seek further expert advice before obtaining animals or commencing experiments. Section 4 should be read in conjunction with Sections 1-3 of A Guide to the Use of Australian Native Mammals in Biomedical Research. Section 2 contains additional data on diet and Section 3 provides information on anaesthesia.
