The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is the main funding body for biomedical research in Australia. The use of animals is crucial to a high proportion of NHMRC-funded research designed to find better ways of preventing, treating and curing human disease, as there are many situations where no alternatives exist.

Synopsis

The document is intended to:

  • detail the NHMRC policy for the care and use of non-human primates for scientific purposes
  • outline basic principles for care and use of non-human primates
  • assist AECs in considering applications for the use of non-human primates for scientific purposes
