This document will be useful to anyone interested in the range, findings and funding of illicit drug research in Australia in 1999.

Synopsis

This document was commissioned by the Office of National Health and Medical Research Council in mid 1998 to provide a summary of research undertaken in the past ten years into illicit drug use in Australia. The draft document was used as a discussion base for a workshop hosted by the Strategic Research Development Committee, (SRDC), a Principal Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council, and held in Sydney in November 1998. The SRCD workshop brough key stakeholders together to assist the SRDC design a research agenda for illicit drugs.

The document provides an overview of Australian research into illicit drug use, with reference to research in the U.S.A. and U.K. where relevant, and lists current research projects funded through the major national or State funding bodies, drug research centres and other Commonwealth or State government initiatives. The authors identify emerging areas of interest in Australian illicit drug research.

In less than 70 pages (plus bibliography) the authors have provided an up to date reference to illicit drug use research in Australia. By use of the bibliography it is possible to find published research specific to all the areas discussed. Details of funding are also included, specifying funding source and amounts.
